Our story

The Lone Goat Story

Our name…

Lone Goat’s name is inspired by the vineyard’s sole inhabitant and guardian of the vines, Zoe the goat. This mischievous madam is well known for her sassy attitude and excellent taste.

Our vines…

Our vineyard on Burnham School Road, established by the Giesen Brothers, has been producing outstanding wine for nearly 30 years. This tradition has been continued by Lone Goat Vineyard, with our first wine, the Botrytis Selection 2007, winning the Trophy for Champion Sweet Wine at the 2008 New Zealand International Wine Show.

Our winemaker…

Matt King has over 20 years experience in the wine industry and is still passionate about producing excellent wines. After studying Chemistry at the University of Canterbury, he completed a Diploma in Oenology and Viticulture at Lincoln University. Matt then worked as Assistant Winemaker and Logistics Manager for Giesen Wines, and was closely involved with their reserve wine production.

Matt enjoys using his expertise and enthusiasm to explore the amazing winemaking potential of Central Canterbury.
